Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer

EVOH Barrier Resin

EVOH is used as a barrier layer in multilayer packaging and molded or extruded structures. The grade, layer design, humidity and processing method determine its performance in the finished product.

Translucent EVOH resin pellets

Material Characteristics

Gas barrier

Helps limit oxygen and other gas transmission in a suitable multilayer structure.

Solvent and chemical barrier

Can reduce permeation of selected solvents and chemicals, subject to grade and exposure conditions.

Aroma retention

Helps retain flavors and aromas in packaging applications.

Transparency

Can support transparent packaging that displays its contents.

Chemical resistance

Resistance to swelling depends on the chemical, temperature and exposure time.

Low thermal conductivity

May be considered in thermal barrier structures; insulation performance must be tested in the finished design.

EVOH for Multilayer Barrier Film

In a multilayer film, EVOH is normally the functional barrier layer rather than the whole film. Finished oxygen-barrier performance depends on the grade, layer thickness, tie layers, humidity, temperature and coextrusion conditions.

Role in the structure

EVOH helps limit oxygen transmission and aroma loss. Adjacent layers provide strength, sealing and protection for the barrier layer.

Service conditions

Higher humidity can reduce EVOH gas-barrier performance. Test the finished structure under conditions representative of storage and use.

Before grade selection

Compare the proposed grade with the line, layer structure and target test method. Check any food-contact or medical claim against grade documentation and destination-market rules.

EVOH Barrier Film Questions

What is EVOH barrier film?

Usually it is a multilayer film in which EVOH limits oxygen and aroma transmission. Other layers provide strength, sealing, moisture protection and adhesion.

Why use EVOH in a multilayer film?

The structure combines the gas barrier of EVOH with the mechanical, sealing and moisture-protection functions of other polymers.

How does humidity affect the EVOH barrier layer?

Moisture can reduce gas-barrier performance. Evaluate the finished film at humidity and temperature conditions relevant to its intended use.

What information is needed to select an EVOH grade?

Provide the application, contents, layer structure and thickness, equipment, processing window, target test method and required documents.

Select the Grade for Your Process

Tell us the intended application, processing method, layer structure and target barrier requirements. Food-contact or medical suitability must be checked against the selected grade's documentation and the rules for the destination market.
